Over the years Hani Mazhar has created cycles of paintings which chronicle historical events, pay homage to his millenary culture or are inspired by its rich literary heritage. Each series either originates in Mesopotamia's ancient sources or reflects its contemporary realities as filtered through Hani's lucid vision and sophisticated imagery. Hani's work is strikingly modern in its underlying graphic sparseness which paradoxically seems to constantly hark back to antiquity. The Al Hallaj cycle represents a different stage for it allows the artist to explore new ground. It is a theme developed along increasingly eloquent, mature, dramatic lines where his sensitive palette illuminates the chiselled texture. These most recent works portray an intense inner journey, a wish to plunge into the recesses of the mind in order to confront the heart striving to attain a glimpse of our ultimate reality or Truth. These visionary tableaux are touchstones to the deepest human feelings. Hani does not intend to translate or to explain Al Hallaj teachings instead he invites the viewer to share the Mystic's life and words with him. Says the artist - " To understand his words you must abandon your usual frame of reality... forget its details, leave behind all control mechanisms and place yourself in that special feeling which sets you free to deal with your God in all sincerity."- Hani Mazhar paintings are conceived from the essential area of passion. He works obsessively and engages his imagination in an intellectual manner which does not forgive nor forget the inconsistency of the human heart.
